This Market – commonly known as “The Fish Shed”- was born more than a hundred years ago with the purpose of better serving the people from Vila Franca do Campo, ensuring the freshness and quality of the fish to which they had access to. Turning to this century, the walls that once muffled the ecoes of the fish sellers who proclaimed their fish, today bear witness to the evolution of times and receive a new concept along with a common and centennial aim: to continue to serve the people of this land and those who visit us. According to Urbano de Mendonça Dias, on his book *A Vila – Publicação Histórica de Vila Franca do Campo VOL. III, “(…) it´s located the Fish Shred, built in 1903, with 29 meters and eight centimetres long and 9 meters wide. It has doors to the costumers and one specifically for the entrance of the fish, the marble counters and the cement floor, plenty of water for washing, its good taste in construction, the elegance of its facade and its very cleanness, leads us to classify this Market as one of the best we have in our country (…)”. Further on in the referred book, the author explains the reason for the construction of this building “This market came to replace the first Market built in this village by the ruling of the 4th of May, 1839, on the Santa Catarina sidewalk, that is a little further west of the current one, in order to, by the words of the council, to put an end to the abuses of fishermen selling fish door by door, sometimes in poor conditions.”
